G L HANDON

Personal Statement:
"I choose to believe abstraction is real and reality is personal fantasy."

Artist Bio:

Geri's formative years were spent in the dual settings of rural New Jersey and urban New York. She came from a creative family so it was natural for her to begin sketching before she could write. During her early teens, she discovered the art of cutting class. She would take an early train to New York City and spend the entire day sketching at the Museum of Modern Art. It is there that she discovered and fell in love with Abstract Expressionism. In the early part of her studies she created a lot of photo-realistic works.

"I felt it necessary to prove that I could copy as well as anyone. I soon grew bored with technical painting and just let my imagination take over. And, after convincing my family that I didn't need psychiatric help, I began exploring surrealism."

"My current style (I hate labels) is something I call Minimalist Abstract Reality. This gives me more flexibility of media/medium used and the subjects I choose to paint. I am by no means finished in my discovery and development as an artist, but I am quite comfortable with my current style."

Geri believes that her mission is to coax people into looking at ordinary subjects from a totally different angle - to see the human condition with all its imperfections and variables. Her work challenges the mind of the viewer to determine the absence or presence of logical composition or what is normally perceived as perfect. Geri's works are owned by businesses and private collectors from California to Germany.
